Michael Mooney Obituary, Celebrating The Life Of Michael Mooney

Michael Mooney Obituary, Death – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Mooney, affectionately known as Mick. A beloved father, father-in-law, papa, brother, and friend, he was also a devoted husband/partner to his cherished Caroline.

Mick’s life journey commenced on New Year’s Day in 1964, when he joyfully entered the lives of his loving parents Francis and Frances Mooney in Airdrie. As the eldest of five siblings, he had younger sisters Angela, Linda, Bernadette, and finally brother Francis.

During his formative years, Michael attended St. Serf’s Primary School, where his kind and helpful demeanor earned him admiration from both peers and teachers. He continued his education at St. Margaret’s High School, cultivating enduring friendships.

At the age of 16, he began working with a local Coal Merchant, remaining in this role until his late 40s. It was during a dance that Mick crossed paths with Caroline McGunnigal, and on October 7, 1989, they united in matrimony at St. Serf’s chapel in Airdrie.

Their union brought forth two precious children, Mechelle and Shawen, who affectionately remember their parents’ sometimes questionable spelling skills. In 2009, their family welcomed a beautiful granddaughter named Cara.

Tragically, Caroline’s life was cut short in 2012 at the age of 48, after bravely confronting cancer. In 2014, Mick found companionship and friendship in Caroline Wilson, and their bond remained strong and unwavering. Over time, Michael’s family grew further with the arrival of six beloved grandchildren: Aimee, Tyler, Jayden, Marcus, Hailie, and Kolbie. To them, he was the most adoring and cherished papa in the world.

Mick was well-known for his involvement in running a Rawyards football team for several years, but his primary identity was that of a “family man.” His profound love for his children and grandchildren led him to do anything and everything to ensure their happiness and well-being.

A Requiem Mass will be held in St. Margaret’s chapel on Thursday, August 31, at 6 pm, followed by the Requiem Mass on Friday, September 1, at 10 am. The subsequent burial rites and interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Rawyards. Following the services, Mechelle, Shawen, Caroline, and Stephanie warmly invite all to join them at The Horseshoe Bar on Deedes Street to continue commemorating and celebrating Mick’s remarkable life.
